THE BIG YAWN:...Trump Rally In Hicksville...

By EDUARDO PAZ-MARTINEZ

McALLEN, Texas | Twice-indicted Donald J. Trump held a rally in tiny Pickens, South Carolina yesterday and every local yokel came. Even Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican U.S. Senator who at times likes and at others hates Trump, was there - to be loudly booed.

So, you'd think the Right-wing news outlets would be all over the rally.

Uh, no.

Conservative news operations such as the New York Post, Wall Street Journal, Breitbart, the Washington Examiner and The Dallas Morning News had. . .NOTHING. Newsmax, the so-called heir apparent to FOX News as Trump's biggest backer, was all over the story - its online front page a coronation of sorts.

More was found on CNN and other reputed Left-Wing news outlets than on the conservative ones. It's a weird reversal in news coverage style, although perhaps in keeping with the idea that Trump is "so over".

The rally featured an audience one might say was the entire citizenry of Hooterville, some rural home to uneducated and uncouth peoples. Photos don't lie, Maria. This was a cheap-ass rally and one not of the wild & huge sort that Trump used to draw with ease. Indictments tend to suck the air out of a politician's gut, but maybe it's the constant beating he also is taking from fellow Republican candidates in the hunt for the 2024 presidential election. Newsmax did not note the number of rally attendees.

Gloved opponent Chris Christie was not in Pickens, South Carolina.

Neither was Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Former Vice-President Mike Pence was not there, either.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley? Absent.

No sign of ex-Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson.

South Carolina U.S. Sen. Tim Scott passed on the bucolic mosh pit.

All of the pols listed above have been strong backers of Trump up until now. And, beyond them, nowhere in Pickens were any of the lesser-known candidates, such as largely-unknown investor Vivek Ramaswamy or Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, or ex-Texas Congressman Will Hurd.

Was Trump spouse Melania there? We didn't see any photos of her on Newsmax's breathless report. Our blogging colleague Jimmy Barton of The Brownsville Observer posted a story about the rally, although he did not offer photos of the aloof Mrs. Trump.

There's still a long way to go before the party primaries next Spring and the election in November of 2024, but it looks like Trump is settling for small venues. Pickens, South Carolina? Get real.

Locally, that would be like area Congressman Vicente Gonzalez holding his best reelection rally in hick Los Fresnos...
